Introduction

The objective of this trip is to climb “Cerro Mojon Rojo” (2163m/a/s/l), which is a classic mountaineering ascent, challenging but without technical difficulties. The terrain involve steep screes, scramble, a 20m section of class IV of and glacier slopes between 30° to 40°.
This is a very scenery peak due to the mountain location.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Transfer to Hostería El Pilar. Trek towards Laguna Sucia, passing trough Piedras Blancas Glacier and Poincenot Campsite. From Laguna Sucia is an scree and scrumble terrain to reach the rock cave below the Rio Blanco Glacier. Aproaching time: aprox 5hs. Vertical gain: Aprox. 800m.

DAY 2

We´ll start before sunrise from our bivouac (5-6 am aprox), after 45 min uphill trough rocky terrain, we´ll reach the base of the glacier. From there we´ll continue with crampons and rope to towards the rocky ridge.
We´´l continue with scramble ( grade II & III) and short-roping, plus one pitch of IV ( 15-20m). The views from the top are very impressives! After a break on the summit (2163m), we´ll make one rapel and downclimb the same way back to the rock cave. We´ll get our camping gear and head back to El Chaltén.
The activity will take around 12hs total, with an elevation gain of 900m aprox

Packing List

Weather: The weather in Patagonia is notorious for high winds and extreme variability. Days can range from sunny with temperatures in the mid-60s (15°C) in October to rain, hail, and occasionally even snow. Nighttime temperatures often drop down into the 30s and 40s (0-5°C). The wind-chill factor can sometimes make the ambient temperature feel much colder. Please come prepared for all possibilities and equipped with good quality rain and wind gear.
